Bread knife: What
you should pay attention to
Is there anything better than freshly baked bread – cut into straight, thin slices?
Whether home-baked or from the bakery – there’s nothing like fresh bread. The advantage of sliced bread is that it keeps much longer and stays fresh for longer. The only problem: how to cut accurate slices without a bread slicer …
Cutting perfectly straight slices of bread without crushing or tearing the bread is often not that easy. The solution: a high-quality Bread Knife.
The Bread Knife: one knife, many advantages
The serrated edge has another advantage: as only the tips come into contact with the cutting board, bread knives do not become blunt as quickly as other knives without a serrated edge.
A good bread knife is also ideal for chopping pineapple or pumpkin, i.e. fruit and vegetables with a hard skin.
This is important for a Bread Knife
The blade cut
A good bread knife must have a serrated edge. Preferably – and we will explain this further below – a serrated edge on both sides.
The blade length
The blade of a bread knife should have a length of at least 20 cm – we even recommend over 25 cm (we’ll tell you why below).
Blade sharpness
Your new bread knife should definitely be sharp, then it will glide through even the hardest crusts.
The steel
The steel should be a high-quality steel – such as Sandvik steel.
The handle
As with any knife, bread knives need to be perfectly balanced and ergonomic. The blade and handle should be balanced for comfortable handling when working, and an ergonomic handle is also ideal in the hand. A wooden handle is not only beautiful to look at, it usually also impresses with its wonderful feel.
If you do not have a good feeling as soon as you pick up a bread knife, you should continue looking for a better bread knife.
But even with a bread knife it can be difficult to cut accurate, straight slices – but Germancut has a solution for this too: the serrated edge sharpened on both sides.
The serrated edge sharpened on both sides
Almost all bread knives have a serrated edge – because it is the characteristic edge that makes a bread knife, but only a few have a serrated edge sharpened on both sides. This is exactly what makes the difference between a good bread knife and an outstanding bread knife. With a serrated edge sharpened on both sides, a bread knife glides effortlessly through every crust and every crumb without tearing or crushing the bread. In addition, a knife with a serrated edge sharpened on both sides can be used by both right-handed and left-handed users without any problems.

A little tip for cutting with a Bread Knife
Instead of many short cutting movements, make one continuous long one. It is best to place the bread knife at the very front and pull the bread knife through the bread with its full length. This is where a long blade is of course an advantage. With our BREADLOVER bread knife, slicing bread is no longer a problem and you can create perfect slices of bread effortlessly.
