KITCHEN KNIVES IN TOP FORM:
SHARPEN & CARE OF YOUR KNIVES
Safety First: Safety always comes first – even in the kitchen and even more so
when you pick up your chef’s knife.
That’s why we would like to dedicate our first blog post to the correct and, above all, safe
handling knives. Our chef’s knives and bread knives are very high-quality
products and therefore extremely sharp. To get you started, we have put together seven
basic steps for the perfect handling of our knives.
First step: Fix your cutting board in place
A simple trick to secure the board and prevent it from sliding away is to place a damp kitchen cloth under the board. The moistened cloth will help the chopping board to adhere to the surface and prevent it from slipping away. With this security, you can concentrate on the knife and cutting in peace.
Second step: Remove your fingers from the danger zone
To protect your fingers, you should therefore learn to keep your fingertips out of the danger zone. To do this, the hand holding the vegetable or meat is formed into a claw. The fingers are bent at the middle joint so that the knife slides past the finger. This technique has another advantage, namely that it allows you to work with precision, as you can determine exactly how wide your cuts should be.
Third step: Leave the tip of the knife on the cutting surface
Fourth step: Don’t exert too much pressure
Conclusion on the care of chef’s knives
Whether vegetable knives, utility knives, chef’s knives or bread knives – they all need protection and must be sharpened regularly.
In future, you can find out everything about our Germancut products and how to look after them on our blog.
We will also provide you with exciting knife-related topics, such as the bread knife, the paring knife, the santoku (the Japanese all-purpose knife) and our cutlery sets as well as our chef’s knives.
We also give you useful tips for handling knives and for your kitchen.
Fifth step: Transport your chef’s knife safely
Sixth step: Store your chef’s knives carefully
When storing your chef’s knives, kitchen knives and all other blades safely, there are two things you should pay attention to. Firstly, the blades should be well locked in case children or unauthorized persons gain access to these knives. Secondly, you should make sure that the blades do not wear out, which would be the case if they were left unprotected in a drawer, for example. It is therefore best to invest in a knife guard to protect your knives from wear and tear – knife sheaths (such as the leather sheaths ) or knife blocks are suitable for this purpose. The knife block also has an additional decorative character.
Seventh step: Pay attention to the quality of your knives
The right knife for the right products
Choosing the right knife is essential for using a knife correctly. Like the Japanese Santoku, chef’s knives and kitchen knives are true all-purpose weapons, they are suitable for many different products, as is the bread knife, which is particularly suitable for hard surfaces thanks to its serrated edge. A set of these knives provides the basic equipment for every kitchen.
